A Secret Plot has recently joined forces with Ojai artist Jane Handel. The one time San Francisco artist made a splash in the art world showing with Von Lintel gallery in Los Angeles and with The Basic Premise in Ojai. Handel’s deeply evocative collages play around with double meanings, occult symbolism, and religious iconography using found materials, in other words, a perfect match for A Secret Plot.

The work on view ‘A Good Buy’ encapsulates Handel’s thinking on the subject-object experience. Shredded money, which she purchased from a yard sale in a 1:1 ratio, 1 shredded dollar in a plastic bag sold for 1 dollar, is juxtaposed with Japanese lacquerware in a 1:1 relationship to itself and echoing the strange sun lamp goggles above, as if these were the eyes or windows into the soul of the transactional experience of life we are all thrown into as human subjects. Consequently, the proverbial ‘good buy’ is also a play on words and double meaning of the ‘good bye’, a salutation closely associated with the act of  looking into the eyes of another subject. Whether it is a good buy or a good bye, or both, Handel’s art impresses with its depth and resourcefulness and never disappoints.

Handel’s work will be on view on the side wall of Ojai’s most celebrated bookstore Bart’s Books staring July 16^th and then in various locations until…..
